The Lower Karoo Group comprises only m of this sequence, and is represented by periglacial sediments and turbidites of the Kondo Pool Formation and lacustrine sands tone, coal and carbonaceous shale of the Mkanga Formation (Table 1). The main subsidence of the basin took place during Upper Karoo times, when up to 7 OOOm of
ing Karoo time, the lithostratigraphic character of the ''''Karoo sequence'''' also changes significantly across the African continent. For this reason, the Karoo basins sensu stricto, which show clear similarities with the main Karoo Basin of South Africa, are generally restricted to southcentral Africa (Fig. 1). To the north of the ...
The three formations constitute the Lower Karoo Group. The Gwembe Coal Formation represents fluvial deposition of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones in channels and on the floodplains. Fourteen lithofacies in the formation are grouped into four facies associations, namely Maamba Sandstone, Coal, Mudrock and Sandstone A facies.
Karoo is well represented along the Zambezi river valley forming several intracratonic basins separated by horsts consisting of igneous and high grade metamorphic Proterozoic rocks. One of the main horst blocks is located between the Cora Bassa region and Tete city, separating the Middle Zambezi Basin and the Lower Zambezi Basin.

Oct 21, 2019· Coal deposit locations in Mashonaland West Province Geology of the Mana Pools area deposits General geology. The area is predominated by sediments of the Karoo Supergroup the lower and upper Karoo, and Jurassic material. These deposits lie within the Mana Pools basin which is bound to the north by a fault which is interpreted as a halfgraben.

The Lower Karoo corresponds to the lower portion of the Karoo Supergroup sequence. The basal unit comprises glacial tillites, being the Dwyka Formation in the MidZambezi Basin, Basal Beds in the Limpopo basins and Kondo Pools Formation in the Mana Pools and Cabora Bassa Basins. These are overlain in the MidZambezi by the Wankie sandstones and coal and the Madumabisa Mudstone

May 16, 2007· Data concerning organic petrology and thermal maturity of Lower Karoo coal measures (Lower Permian) are of considerable importance in determining the hydrocarbon potential of sediments in the riftvalley and halfgraben complexes of the Luangwa and Zambezi valleys of eastern and southern Zambia, respectively, and in the extensive sedimentary basin developed on relatively stable .
The Gwembe Coal Formation of Permian age belongs to the Lower Karoo Group of the Karoo Supergroup (PermoCarboniferous to early Jurassic), which crops out in the midZambezi Valley, southern Zambia. The formation has a maximum thickness of 280 m.
